Women In Academic Medicine (WIAM) : American Medical Women’s Association (AMWA)

Dear Physician Supporter,

The UMMSM American Medical Women’s Association (AMWA) is establishing the AMWA Student Fund to support the initiatives of our future graduates and women in medicine. My name is Marissa Orenstein, and I am currently serving as the President of our local UMMSM AMWA Branch and also serving as the President-Elect of the National AMWA Student Division. This is a two-year role, during which I will become the next national president of the Student Division.

I was given the opportunity to become involved in National AMWA as a first year student, when my expenses to attend the Annual Meeting in Washington, DC were covered through a John K Robinson Grant. Our former AMWA President, along with our Faculty Advisor, Dr. Hilit Mechaber, were eager to send me to this conference to help increase our representation on the National Level. Excited by the opportunities, I became part of the Conference Planning Committee and subsequently was chosen by my peers to become President-Elect of the National Organization. This is an incredible honor and a privilege, but also a large responsibility – not only to the National Organization, but also to our AMWA branch. I could not have attained such an incredible leadership role without the help of those who supported me with scholarship funds and my peers, fellow UMMSM AMWA chapter members who attended the conference with me. We were lucky last year, as the meeting was locally held in Miami, FL and, therefore, not a large expense for students. Eleven chapter members were able to attend, giving us the impetus to now be a nationally recognized AMWA branch, opening doors for many future leadership opportunities.

Now we need to sustain this momentum and continue to support our student members to participate at the National Level. WE NEED YOUR HELP! We are raising funds to send members to the meeting in NYC in 2013. Along with fundraisers, we are aiming to also create a long-term, sustainable plan to support the continued involvement of our student members. We have created a scholarship fund to support student participation. This is something I am passionate about – without others having supported me, I would not be able to represent the University of Miami to this extent. By establishing this fund, and helping it grow, I hope to reach my ultimate goal of giving back to our UMMSM AMWA chapter, and supporting the future of women in medicine.

We hope that you will consider donating to provide an invaluable experience to a future woman physician: A little goes a long way when donating to the AMWA Student Fund!
