Summer Training in Research Program

The Summer Training in Research (STIR) Program is designed to give pre-medical students from underrepresented backgrounds deeper insights into the field of medicine, including issues that greatly affect the health of traditionally underserved groups. Participants will learn how to pursue a specific research problem under the supervision of a faculty member and will have the opportunity to present their final poster by the end of the program.

This is a full-time, seven-week residential program that runs from Monday, June 8 – Friday, July 24, 2020. This program is for qualified students with an interest in research and who intend to apply to medical school.

Eligibility Requirements

To be eligible to apply, applicants must meet the following requirements:

  • Underrepresented minority in medicine which include: African American, Latino-Hispanic, American Indian/Alaska Native, Native Hawaiian/Pacific Islander AND/OR students from economically or educationally disadvantaged backgrounds (such as first generation, single parent or low income household)
  • US citizen or permanent resident
  • College junior, senior, master’s student, or recent college or master’s graduate (within the last two years)
  • Completed at least two years of undergraduate science or premed coursework (must have taken Organic Chemistry)
  • Minimum overall GPA of 3.0
  • Proof of health insurance required upon acceptance
  • Research experience preferred

  • Application Deadline: April 3, 2020
  • Decision Notification: Friday, April 17, 2020
  • Program Dates: June 8, 2020 – July 24, 2020

Application Requirements

Applications will be reviewed once complete, and all supporting documents must be submitted by the application deadline, March 13, 2020. Incomplete applications or those submitted after the deadline will not be considered.

IMPORTANT: Letters of recommendation should be submitted on official letterhead and at least one letter must come from a science professor. The Dean of Students Recommendation Form must be completed by your Dean of Students or a similar official.
