Dr. Hilit Mechaber Honored for Contributions to Women in Medicine

Hilit Mechaber, M.D., Associate Dean for Student Services, was honored at the 43rd University of Miami Women’s Commission Annual Breakfast, where she received the May A. Brunson Award, which is named in honor of UM’s second dean of women, who served the University from 1946 to 1970.

Presented March 6, the award is given annually to a UM administrator, faculty or staff member who has made an outstanding contribution to improve the status of women at the University.

Honoring Women in Academic Medicine and Their Achievements

The Miller School’s Women in Academic Medicine (WIAM) hosted an intimate January 21 reception at the home of Anne Burdick, M.D., Ph.D., professor of dermatology and cutaneous surgery and Associate Dean for TeleHealth and Clinical Outreach, honoring women in academic medicine and recent successes and achievements of women faculty at UM.

Miami Model Program Prepares Aspiring Medical Students

Port-au-Prince native Djamel Joachin was inspired to join the medical field in the chaotic aftermath of Haiti’s earthquake. The then-engineering major traveled from Gainesville to Haiti to translate for doctors, but suddenly found himself drawing blood from patients. Attending this year’s Miami Model diversity program puts Joachin closer to his dreams of going to medical school.

Honoring the Achievements of Women In Academic Medicine

The University of Miami’s Women in Academic Medicine (WIAM) recently hosted its annual reception to honor the career accomplishments of 21 women faculty at the Miller School of Medicine.

The event held at the Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center began with a networking hour during which attendees from various departments discussed topics of shared interest. The evening culminated with special recognition of women faculty, including those who were promoted during the 2014 fiscal year.Read more.
