Lactation Rooms Open for Nursing Mothers at the Miller School and Across UM (E-Update 5/08/2012)

Only a few months ago, Dominique Kirkland had to use her supervisor’s office at the Miller School to express breast milk for her newborn son, Kelvin. A toxicologist in the Department of Pathology, Kirkland works in an open laboratory, without the privacy needed to pump milk at least three times a day.

But now, dedicated rooms across the University are providing nursing mothers at UM clean, comfortable and secluded places to express milk, and Kirkland couldn’t be happier.

Dedicated rooms across the University are giving nursing mothers at UM the clean and private accommodations they need to express breast milk. On April 30, the University of Miami marked the opening of the rooms with a ribbon cutting-ceremony at Gables One Tower, where one of the nine rooms is located. Lactation Rooms Support Nursing Mothers at Work

On Monday, April 30 at 3:30 p.m., the University of Miami will mark the official opening of its lactation rooms for nursing mothers with a ribbon cutting ceremony in the lobby of Gables One Tower across from the Coral Gables campus. The rooms, nine of which have opened in various locations across UM’s campuses, exemplify the University’s commitment to providing services and support for mothers and their infants.

Nursing Mother Rooms Now Available Across the University

In its continuing effort to foster a family-friendly environment, the University of Miami is pleased to announce the opening of dedicated rooms at the Miller School and on all UM campuses to support nursing mothers upon their return to work. Details of the program, which is open to faculty, staff and students, can be viewed in the Break Time for Nursing Mothers policy.

Miller School Hosts Student National Medical Association Leadership Meeting

The Miller School and its campus chapter of the Student National Medical Association (SNMA) hosted about 60 medical students and two dozen pre-med students attending the SNMA’s 2012 National Leadership Institute held last month at the Lois Pope LIFE Center.

Coffee Beanery Supports UM’s Minority Health Professions Program

On Fridays the staff of the Coffee Beanery, one of the newest additions to the food and beverage outposts on the Miller School campus, don their khakis and aprons, but instead of the usual black polos, they opt for white T-shirts emblazoned with the ubiquitous “U” and information about the Miami Model for Health Professions Education.
