Dean’s Diversity Council

Dean’s Diversity Council

The University of Miami Miller School of Medicine Dean’s Diversity and Inclusion council, is an academic executive council commissioned by Dr. Pascal Goldschmidt, and endorsed and supported by our current Dean – Dr. Henri R. Ford. The Council is chaired by Stephen Symes MD, Associate Dean for Diversity and Inclusion, with the 50 -plus individual council “champions” nominated by chairs, center and unit directors, and faculty, staff and student groups.

The council provides a forum to develop members into diversity champions. It allows those champions to gain the skills to assist their individual units, departments and centers to learn best practice in inclusion, and cultivate a culture of belonging. The council will advocate for structural and policy change at the institutional level, and promote visible progress at the local (unit, department, center) level. Since our first meeting in May 2016, the council has convened monthly, with an initial focus on educating each other on Diversity and Inclusion best practices, and climate issues on our own campus. The council reports to the Dean of the School of Medicine, and also the leadership cabinet, faculty council, and individual units.
